Because of a recent influx of resident complaints, officers of the DeGraff Police Department begin an emphasis this week on enforcing zoning issues related to overgrown properties and junk vehicles.
According to a public notice, beginning Tuesday the department is targeting, “junk vehicles, trash, noxious weeds and high grass.
“Officers will be issuing warning notices to property owners in violation,” according to the department.
Property owners that receive a formal warning will have 14 days to bring their properties up to standard, and failure to do so, “will result in a summons to Bellefontaine Municipal Court.”
Disabled vehicles on the property should be blanketed with a car cover, Police Chief George Piersall said.
“It has been ages since we have issued a summons for a zoning violation,” he said. “I really hope it stays that way.”
Chief Piersall said his department has been contacted both by village officials and citizens about disabled vehicles and overgrown properties.
“There have been arguments and tempers flaring over this situation,” he said.
He said it was not until just recently that his department has been asked to actively get involved.
“You can rest assured, this Tuesday the enforcement action will start,” chief Piersall said.
