West Liberty Historical Society wants to preserve former police station
West Liberty Village Council is prepared to construct an approximately 2,000 square-foot addition to the existing town hall for the purpose of housing the village police force.
Trustees in Liberty Township, however, in a joint meeting with council Monday expressed concern for the historical integrity of the building, and were not overjoyed at the thought of a new addition outside their office door.
Council members and Mayor Greg Hostetler stressed that an “exhaustive search” to find an alternative location turned up no better options than a 50-by-50 foot area on the north side of the town hall building.
Estimates in the amount of $1,800 to remove some asbestos, and $10,700 to raze the site of the former police station at 112 E. Columbus St. have been received. Even if the existing police station is torn down, current village zoning laws prohibit constructing a new building on the current lot, because of setback rules.
“We didn’t want to get in a position of fighting ourselves,” by trying to change the zoning laws or pursue a variance, the mayor said.
