The second-seeded Pirates, who had lost just once coming in, fell down 6-0 after two innings and could not recover en route to an 11-2 loss to fourth-seeded Houston in a Division IV sectional final at Bradford High School.
“We just didn’t come to play,” said Riverside head coach Andy Phelps, who saw his team finish with a 23-2 record. “They jumped on us early and we just couldn’t answer. Give them credit. They came out and hit the ball and made plays and we didn’t.”
The Pirates, whose lone loss of the regular season came in a 4-2 defeat to Indian Lake, could not put it together offensively or defensively against the Wildcats (19-8).
Riverside committed three errors and allowed 10 hits, while only coming up with five hits at the plate.
“Their pitcher was good, but we just didn’t come ready to hit,” said Phelps. “It just wasn’t our day.”
