Riverside’s girls basketball team delivered a clutch fourth-quarter effort to rally past host Triad 52-49 on Saturday in a non-league contest.
The Pirates are now 5-4 on the season as the Cardinals slip to 2-5.
“I’m extremely proud of how the girls played,” said RHS head coach Bryce Hodge. “We started a little slow and let Triad knock down too many three-pointers, but we settled in and started chipping away.
“We also had our fewest turnovers of the season. We are seeing improvement and it’s paying off by leading to wins. I’m also glad our free-throw shooting improved today, that was a big part of our win as well.”
Triad gained the momentum in the first quarter with a 21-13 run.
Riverside turned the tide in the second quarter with a 16-5 run, which put the Pirates ahead by three (29-26) at the break.
The momentum shifted again in the third quarter when Triad edged Riverside 12-7. That put the Cardinals back in front at 38-36.
Riverside rallied again in the fourth quarter with a 16-11 effort and that was enough to put the Pirates back on top for good.
Lauryn Sanford led the Pirates in scoring with 20 points, Amber Waters recorded a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds, Alli Knight tallied nine points and Kirstin Schlumbohm had seven points.
For the Cardinals, Frani Levan led all scorers with 25 points, Cati LeVan had 10 points with four assists and Bailey Perry had eight points.
There was no junior varsity game.
Riverside hosts Benjamin Logan on Saturday for a local non-league contest. Triad plays again Thursday, Jan. 2, at home against West Jefferson in Ohio Heritage Conference action.
