Philip D “Cap” Smith, 74, of West Liberty, passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
He was born Sept. 13, 1942, in DeGraff. Phil retired from farming after many years, and also worked at Harding and Midwest.
He loved spending time with his family and going to auctions. He was a loyal Cleveland Browns fan. He was a person who would try to help anyone he could. He was generous, stubborn, strong willed and goofy at times. A man of few words, but when he spoke you listened. He was a friend to many, and everyone who knew him will miss him dearly.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel Ann; daughters, Jill Smith, Laurie (Bruce) Thurman and Lisa (Steve) Sterling; son, Jerry Dean Smith; sister, Linda McClain; grandchildren, Cale, Carter, Cooper and Christian Sterling, Derek and Kody Thurman; JR Smith, Trevor and Taylor Young; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Don Maples.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Jennings Farley Funeral Home & Crematory, 5591 S. U.S. Route 68, West Liberty, where visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. Burial is in Highland Cemetery.
