Ohio Hi-Point Career Center’s initiative to bring career exploration to younger students continues to grow this school year.
Ohio Hi-Point’s Education Academy and Cosmetology students spent a morning with the Indian Lake Elementary third-graders doing a cosmetology lesson.
The third-graders learned about different careers in the cosmetology industry, like hairstylist, barber, makeup artist, and more while practicing basic braiding skills and nail painting.
The initiative is spearheaded by OHP’s Education Academy and instructor, Mrs. Walls. Within the Education Academy, students prepare to become future educators, teachers, and coaches.
“This was a natural fit for us,” said Walls. “We believe it’s important to highlight different career fields and pathways at an early age. My Education Academy students are able to work collaboratively with other OHP students in different program labs to create and design lessons, and then my students adjust the activities to fit the grade level they are teaching, and then deliver those lessons to the partner school students.”
The Education Academy students also recently visited Indian Lake Middle School seventh-graders, teaching a culinary lesson. Collaborating with OHP’s Culinary Arts program, the students taught the seventh-graders about careers in the culinary industry and proper sanitation and food safety while students worked in groups to cook their own grilled turkey sandwich called the Fat Gobbler.
The Indian Lake students who are involved with the after-school cooking class will be traveling to Ohio Hi-Point Career Center for a Chopped by Cobb competition as they cook a meal in OHP’s restaurant, The Sloan Kitchen.
More partnerships and collaborations like these will happen throughout the year as Ohio Hi-Point’s Education Academy students are preparing lessons for healthcare, IT, engineering, welding, construction, graphic design and more.
