The nursing director for the Logan County Health District said at Wednesday’s board meeting that statistics show a slight decline in the number of sexually transmitted diseases in the first few months since an in-house initiative to raise awareness about condom use began.
“Since we started this in September, the number of chlamydia cases are down,” Kay Schroer said. “It may be a coincidence, but it could be a positive sign this is working.”
She said prior to September, an average of 12 cases were reported monthly, but in recent months that number has averaged five cases.
Chlamydia is often spread without knowing it because it is difficult to detect, she said, and condom use is one of the most effective ways to combat it.
Last fall, the agency began offering education and some free condoms to clients at risk of spreading the disease, she told the board.
