Bellefontaine’s new youth tackle football program is ready to begin its season under a new format, Bellefontaine Joint Parks and Recreation District Superintendent Kris Myers said Tuesday.
“We’re excited to see where we’re headed with this organization,” Mr. Myers told the parks board. “We’ve had good response from coaches and by-in from parents and the community. There’s still some questions and rumors out there we are trying to address through social media and other outlets.”
Under the new format, youths in third- and fourth-grades will comprise one league, while fifth- and sixth-graders will be in another league. The children will then be divided into an even number of teams that play against one another each Sunday.
The younger children will play in seven-on-seven tackle games with a focus more on teaching fundamentals than competition, Mr. Myers said. The older group will play in 11-person tackle games. The overall goal is to keep team sizes small so all children get ample playing time.
