A plan to hire two parttime municipal prosecutors received a first reading Tuesday before the Bellefontaine City Council.
City Law Director Josh Stolly has developed a plan he believes will bring more stability to the position after several years of turnover.
“The attorneys we have right now are doing a great job,” he said.
But the time demands of the position pulls them away from their private practices and the financial compensation is not enough to cover their losses, he noted.
The incoming attorneys will be employees of Thompson Dunlap & Heydinger Ltd., and will have resources to cover their private practice work and assist with the prosecutorial duties.
Compensation will be $72,000 a year shared between the attorneys. The administrative prosecutor will receive a larger portion of the compensation.
Payments will be directly to the attorneys and not through TDH.
Bellefontaine pays 60 percent of the salaries while Logan County covers 40 percent.
