Keith A. Ellison, 33, of Springfield, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and possession of hashish after a 3:30 p.m. Sunday traffic stop.
He also was cited for failure to drive in the marked lanes, driving on curbs and not using a safety belt.
Acting on a witness report, officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department found the motorist leaving a drive-up automated teller machine at Huntington Bank, 201 E. Columbus Ave., and followed him.
He was observed driving in the middle of Madriver Street and nearly struck another northbound vehicle before merging into the left-turn only lane at Sandusky Avenue.
When the light turned green, he ignored the flashing lights of an officer’s cruiser and traveled northbound on Madriver. He came to a stop at Brown Avenue with the passenger side tires off the road.
Officers ordered him out of the car at gunpoint after he failed to show his hands.He also failed to follow orders to turn off the ignition.
Once out of the sport utility vehicle, officers noted the pupils of his eyes were dilated and he swayed from side to side, his speech was slurred and there was an odor of marijuana about him.
He told officers he traveled to Bellefontaine to go to Rax Roast Beef Restaurant. Officers searched the vehicle which belongs to the suspect’s stepfather. They found a variety of marijuana and cannabis products in the center console of the SUV.
He told all of the contraband belonged to him and that he purchased the items in Michigan. He couldn’t explain why he was carrying $4,200 in cash. Field sobriety tests indicated he was impaired and officers took him into custody. He was transported to the Logan County Jail.and he refused to provide a urine or blood sample.
Officers look into hit-skip crash
A northbound 1998 Honda Accord hit a tree and a street sign pole at the southeast corner of Main Street and Chillicothe Avenue around 12:50 a.m. Saturday. The motorist drove north from the scene. A passenger side mirror with silver finish was recovered at the crash site.
A tree was snapped off in the crash.
