John M. Birt, 67, of Bellefontaine, was flown by MedFlight helicopter to the OSU Wexner Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries sustained in a crash Friday afternoon.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report Nacole Vogelsang 45, of Zanesfield, was operating a northbound sport utility vehicle about 4:30 p.m. on Main Street in West Mansfield and stopped to turn into a driveway at 692 S. Main St. When she pulled into the path of a southbound motorcycle operated by Birt.
Vogelsang and her passenger, Dustin Jones, 14, of West Mansfield, each were checked at the scene by Bokescreek EMS, but they were not transported from the scene. She was cited for failure to yield.
Deputies report Birt was not wearing a helmet. Vogelsang was wearing a seat belt.
Damage was heavy to both vehicles.
• Gavin Hoffer, 22, of Marysville, and Teaira N. Judd, 24, of Zanesfield, each were transported by private vehicle and Macochee EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in a crash about 3:40 p.m. Sunday.
Deputies report Hoffer was operating a northbound car on U.S. Route 68 near State Route 508 when he drove left of center and struck a southbound pickup operated by Judd in a head-on collision.
Damage was heavy to both vehicles, which were towed from the scene. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts. Hoffer was cited for left of center.
Domestic dispute reported at campground
Austin I. Swaim, 25, of New Carlisle, was charged with domestic violence Saturday evening relating to an incident at Welcome Woods Campground, 7547 State Route 366, Russells Point.
Deputies responded to the campground about 11 p.m. in reference to an intoxicated man fighting and punching a trailer.
When they arrived, they spoke with Swaim, who admitted he had too much to drink that evening and said he had punched a trailer.
Deputies also spoke with the defendant’s father regarding the incident, and they observed that he had sustained a cut on his right hand. The father said Swaim had come at him and attempted to tackle him, and then the pair began to fight on the ground and he was injured during the altercation.
Swaim was placed under arrest and was transported to the Logan County Jail.
• Chet A. Gross, 46, of Columbus, was charged with assault related to an incident early Sunday morning at 411 Westview, Russells Point.
Deputies were dispatched to the address about 1:15 a.m. on a report from a resident who said her boyfriend, Gross, had scratched her face.
Deputies spoke with her outside the residence, and they observed a scratch on her face that was bleeding. She told deputies that during a confrontation, Gross had head-butted her and scratched her face. She declined EMS treatment.
The defendant told deputies that his girlfriend had been verbally and physically abusive toward him, but he would not provide details about the incident. He was placed under arrest and was lodged in the jail.
Man lodged for disorderly conduct
David E. Mathews, 59, of 8890 Township Road 239, Apt. 27, Lakeview, was charged with disorderly conduct as a result of an incident Sunday at Midway Marathon, 8859 T.R. 239, Lakeview.
Deputies responded to a report about 1:25 p.m. that Mathews was armed with a hammer and wanted to speak with deputies.
Upon arrival, deputies said Mathews began walking toward the patrol car with the hammer in hand. He was ordered twice to drop the hammer, and he complied.
He told deputies that he also had a knife. He was ordered to his knees and to place his hands on his head. Deputies were able to secure the knife from his pocket
Deputies accompanied Mathews to his residence, which he said had been burglarized.
Based upon the defendant’s responses and explanations, deputies said they suspected that Mathews was under the influence of a controlled substance. He said he was “on suboxone,” and denied taking methamphetamine when asked by deputies. He was placed under arrest and was transported to the jail.
