Logan County voters will have one less ballot question to consider Nov. 6.
A 0.3-mills additional levy for the mental health district serving Logan and Champaign counties has been removed from the upcoming midterm election ballot, the Logan County Board of Elections has confirmed.
The levy was intended to generate a total of $616,000 for current expenses, according to resolutions previously filed with the elections board.
Technicalities within the ballot language prompted its removal, said Tammy Nicholl, executive director for the Logan/Champaign Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Services district.
Had the levy passed as it was worded, the tax would have only applied to Logan County, Nicholl said.
“It was worded in such a way that only Logan County would have been included,” she wrote in an e-mail.
“When we caught some mistakes in the resolution language, it was too late to make the fixes and have it filed by the deadline.”
This levy had been the first time the Logan/Champaign mental health services district has requested a new, additional levy, Nicholl said.
“This was a learning curve for all of us,” she said.
The board now must consider whether to go back on the ballot in May 2019, or wait until next November.
An attorney will be involved in the next ballot resolution to ensure every step is properly followed and the levy language is correct, Nicholl said.
