Fund established in Dr. Varian’s honor
Dr. Grant Varian will retire at the end of 2020 after serving as a physician in Logan County for 46 years and as medical director of Mary Rutan Hospital since 2000.
During his tenure, Mary Rutan Hospital officials said Dr. Varian led the organization in expanding quality services to meet local health care needs within the community and offered medical expertise on numerous state and local boards and committees to improve health outcomes and services here and beyond Logan County.
“Dr. Varian’s deep breadth of knowledge about wellness and health care issues, his incredible research and analytic skills, and his enthusiastic yet humble commitment to improving health services have been a priceless gift to our community,” said Mandy Goble, Mary Rutan Hospital president and CEO. “He has left a major mark in our community by improving services for the thousands of people who have unknowingly benefited from his work.”
Dr. Varian received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health in 1971 and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Columbus.
During 1974, Dr. Varian began private practice in internal medicine in 1974 with Dr. Glen Miller at Oak Hill Medical Associates. He and Dr. Miller separated from Oak Hill in 1981 and established Mad River Internal Medicine.
After Dr. Miller’s retirement, Dr. Varian practiced for three years with Dr. Robert Love. In 1993, Dr. Winfred Stoltzfus joined Mad River Internal Medicine. Dr. Varian continued to serve patients in private practice until becoming the full-time medical director of Mary Rutan Hospital in 2000.
While serving, Dr. Varian’s commitment to the position of medical director and the team was integral to the advancement of Mary Rutan Hospital’s provider recruitment program, evidence based medicine standards, quality improvement initiatives, clinical education and the expansion of many patient services within the community, hospital officials related.
The retiring medical director’s involvement at the state and local level includes serving on the Logan County Board of Health since 2008. He is one of the original members and served as chairman of the Ohio State Health Network Board of Directors and as chairman of the Ohio Hospital Association Physician Leadership Council. Since 1988, Dr. Varian has served as chairman of the board of Ohio Cancer Research Associates, a state-wide organization that provides seed money for aggressive basic cancer research.
Additionally, Dr. Varian is a member of the Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Services Board of Logan and Champaign County, and is active in the Coalition for Opiate Relief Efforts for Logan County, where he serves as co-chair of the Medical Harm Reduction Committee.
