Mary Lou Powell, age 94, of West Liberty, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
She was born August 1, 1929, in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, to the late John Foster and Roseanne (Shy) Doty.
Mary graduated from Salem High School in 1947. On May 3, 1947, she married her beloved husband of 69 years, Donald Powell. Mary attended West Liberty United Church of Christ and was a member of the Monday Afternoon Club. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her many neighbors, whose friendship she cherished. Mary loved gardening, attending school sporting events, and sharing a good laugh with those around her. In addition, she had a lifelong love of NASCAR.
Mary is survived by nieces Rebecca Neer, Deborah Ryder, Sandra Bahan, Amanda Robison, Patricia Hamilton, Robin Traxler, and Susan Reeb; nephews Roger Hamilton, Michael Hamilton, Gary McCulla, Keith McCulla, and Doug Doty, as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews and her friends Aaron and Kim Hollar and their daughters, whom she loved like family.
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Donald; brother, John Doty; sisters, Genevieve Harvey, Margaret McCulla, Betty Hamilton, and Joanne Henry; and nieces, Peggy Rowe and Amy Hartman.
Mary and Don generously donated their bodies for scientific research to the Ohio State University. There will be an official ceremony to celebrate Mary’s contribution later.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at West Liberty United Church of Christ, 212 W. Newell Street, West Liberty, with Pastor Karen Griswold officiating. Please make Memorial contributions to the West Liberty United Church of Christ.
