Martha Jane Stanley, a lifelong resident of Logan County, passed away Tuesday morning, April 23, 2019, surrounded by her family in the comfort and peace of her home in Jefferson Township near Bellefontaine.
Martha was born on Nov. 21, 1926, in Urbana, the first child of the late Jay B. and Helen Opal Holmes Snyder. She married her high school sweetheart, Philip R. Stanley, in 1947. Their marriage spanned more than 50 years until Phil’s death in 2004. Martha was also preceded in death by a younger brother, James (Ami) Snyder.
A graduate of West Liberty High School, Martha worked briefly in the United States Post Office in West Liberty until she and Phil began a long and successful career in farming. In the 1970s they also owned and operated S&K Farm Supply, a dairy farm equipment business where Martha worked as the office manager until her retirement.
Martha is survived by her children, Steven (Lu Ann) Stanley of Oakwood; Douglas Stanley of Eugene, Ore., and Jill Stanley of Cleveland; grandchildren, Alexander (Rebecca) Stanley of Madison, Wis.; Joseph Stanley of Midland, Texas, Nicholas Stanley of Cincinnati; Samuel Stanley of Cleveland Heights and Emma Stanley of Columbus; younger sister, Suzanne (Karl) Hostetler of West Liberty; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Martha was a member of the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church for more than 65 years. She was also a member of the Rhoda Circle, the Monday Afternoon Literary Club of West Liberty and the Walnut Grove United Methodist Women. She volunteered for 22 years as an active member of the Mary Rutan Hospital Guild.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Friday, April 26, at Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main St., and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, funeral service at the funeral home. Pastor David Moore officiates and burial follows in Huntsville Cemetery with active pallbearers, Alexander Stanley, Joseph Stanley, Nicholas Stanley, Samuel Stanley, Jeffery Hostetler and Christopher Hostetler, and Angelo Bernard as an honorary pallbearer.
