MOORE |
Matthew D. Moore, 26, of 311 S. Carlisle St., Quincy, was charged with a count of felony theft Saturday.
Deputies responded about 1 p.m. to a report of a theft at the Handy Mart, 105 Carlisle St., Quincy.
The caller, Jerry Smith of Quincy, said he had left his wallet on a counter at the business. When he went back to the store to retrieve his wallet, he said $1,240 in cash was missing from his wallet.
Video surveillance footage from the business helped deputies to identify Moore.
Deputies responded to Moore’s nearby residence.
He was not home at the time, but he arrived home about 30 minutes later, deputies said.
At first, he told deputies that he had seen the wallet, but had not taken the money, but he later changed his story, stating that he had taken the money and that he had hidden it at the Quincy park.
Deputies recovered $82 from his person and placed him under arrest. He informed deputies where he had hidden the cash at the park, and a total of $840 was recovered from that location.
Moore was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
