Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department arrested a city man they believe swallowed a ball of crack cocaine after leading them on a foot chase.
Joel L. Egler, 34, of 208 S. Madriver St., was charged with obstructing official business, resisting arrest and trespassing on railroad property after the 9:30 p.m. Friday incident.
An officer on patrol stopped Mr. Egler for riding a bicycle without a light on west High Avenue near Walker Street.
Mr. Egler identified himself and admitted that he is under parole supervision for trafficking in crack cocaine. During questioning, the officer suspected Mr. Egler was hiding drugs inside his mouth before the suspect fled on foot.
Other officers who arrived for backup helped apprehend Mr. Egler. While struggling with officers, the suspect allegedly swallowed whatever was in his mouth and then discontinued struggling.
He had a cut on his leg from broken glass on the ground where he fell prior to the struggle with officers.
A Bellefontaine squad responded and took him to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment. He was later taken to the Logan County Jail and a holder for a parole violation was also filed.
