A total of 847 vehicles passed through a sobriety checkpoint conducted by area law enforcement Friday evening in the city of Bellefontaine, and one driver was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs during that time, troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol report.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department and deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers with the checkpoint, which was conducted on south Main Street just north of Lake Avenue by the Logan County Fairgrounds from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Also during the four-hour checkpoint, another individual also was issued a summons for having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, troopers said.
During the past three years, crash statistics indicate that there have been a total of 64 impaired driver crashes in Logan County within a three-mile radius of the checkpoint area. Of those crashes, three were alcohol-related fatalities and 20 were injury crashes.
Multi-agency sobriety checkpoints illustrate law enforcement agencies’ unified front in deterring and combating impaired driving, troopers said. Logan County law enforcement agencies remind the motoring public to buckle up and not to drink and drive.
