Local animal lovers concerned with the recent closing of the Top of Ohio Pet Shelter are planning to meet next week to discuss possible options for the future of animal welfare in Logan County.
Jan Cooper, a former president of the board of the Humane Society Serving Logan County, said she and others are planning to host a general informational meeting Wednesday, June 15, at the Logan County Solid Waste Management District office, 1100 S. Detroit St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the formal discussion begins at 7 p.m.
“It seems like everyone is on a different page, but we have got a lot of animal advocates here in Logan County,” Ms. Cooper said. “We want to start talking about the next step and what will happen down the line.”
The Top of Ohio Pet Shelter, which has been the official shelter for Logan County’s stray dogs and unwanted kittens, officially closed its doors Thursday, and the Humane Society Serving Logan County that manages it is in the process of liquidating its assets to try to pay off nearly $300,000 in outstanding debts.
The Logan County Commissioners announced earlier this week they are entering into an agreement with the Union County Humane Society to house strays taken in by the Logan County Dog Warden at the Marysville shelter. They had not received or signed the contract late Thursday, but said they expect to do so when it is received and will meet with Union County officials next week.
Ms. Cooper said all topics concerning the future welfare of local animals are possible up to and including the foundation of a new non-profit rescue organization that could open its own shelter and seek the county contract.
