Determination has been a key word throughout the history of the Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities that has helped to expand and propel forward the opportunities for those served by the agency throughout the 60 years of the organization.
Superintendent Saul Bauer shared with attendees Thursday at the agency’s annual elected officials breakfast hosted during Developmental Disabilities Month that it was a determined and dedicated effort by a group of local parents in 1959 that brought about the founding of the agency.
“Parents at that time got together and raised a total of $4,600 through private donations. Those funds were used to establish the Hi-Point Day School for children with disabilities. The money was used to pay for a teacher and a station wagon for the school.
“Those parents wanted more for their children — they weren’t satisfied with the options at the time of either keeping their children at home away from society or sending them off to an institution. They wanted something better for their children and for future generations.”
The superintendent said now six decades later, “We’ve come a long way,” highlighting that more than 50 individuals served by the LCBDD are currently employed in the Logan County community. Bauer also unveiled a new sign and logo for the agency with the words “Together We Grow” featuring two individuals making their way up a hill. The sign denotes the 60th anniversary for the LCBDD.
