Recent warm temperatures and sunny skies provided a pleasant environment for Benjamin Logan Schools fourth-graders to explore their land lab and practice science observation skills. While at the land lab, students selected a natural object — a leaf, a seed head, the bark of a tree, or an entire plant. After careful study, a set of both qualitative and quantitative observations was recorded in their writer’s journal. The students also worked on their writing skills, expressing their personal thoughts and feelings by writing essays, poems and stories. Plant identification was also part of the day, and the pupils located native species such as Big Bluestem and Indian Grass in the prairie area and also invasive species such as Bush Honeysuckle.
