CEDARVILLE — It was a stellar start to the postseason for West Liberty- Salem’s girls cross country teams here Saturday at Cedarville University.
The Big Orange’s state-ranked girls tean captured its first district championship in five years, while the Big Orange boys also advanced with a seventh- place finish.
Triad senior Holly Cole also qualified through as an individual.
WL-Salem’s girls, who are ranked fourth in the state, won the district title with 56 points and had three of the top-five finishers. Ft. Loramie was second overall with 65 points, Versailles came in third with 121 points and Covington was fourth with 137 points.
The last time the Big Orange girls won a district championship was in 2012. They have now advanced to the regional meet 21 times in the past 23 years.
“We knew coming into the race that Ft. Loramie would give us a run for our money,” said WL-Salem girls head coach Ann Vogel. “They’re a strong team and very well-coached. We stuck to our race plan and really fought hard the second half of the race. At this point of the season, we just need to keep the pedal down, our heads in the game and get better with each meet.”
