Indian Lake Elementary School first-grader Alex Williams shows his new mask to ILES Counselor Suzy Mallory as soon as he gets to school Wednesday morning. After nearly six months, Indian Lake teachers and staff members were overjoyed to see students spilling off the buses, hopping out of vehicles and streaming in the doors to the district facilities. Wednesday was the first day of classes for students in grades 1-12 and Indian Lake was the first district to return to school in Logan County after the spring shutdown. Freshman and senior classes hosted socially-distanced meetings to start the year and teachers presented all the updated procedures first thing in the morning. Students and staff are all wearing masks and surfaces are being sanitized often and after each class change. Many classes were conducted outside, as well, to take advantage of the fresh air and beautiful weather. Indian Lake kindergarten students with the last names A through K will begin Thursday, while the end of the alphabet will come Friday. Riverside students return to class Aug. 26, Bellefontaine and West Liberty-Salem students begin school Sept. 8, and Benjamin Logan students start the year Sept. 10. (INDIAN LAKE SCHOOLS PHOTO)
