Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Joseph Albert Dionne, of Sebring, Fla., died March 13, 2016, at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Cheverly, Md., on Aug. 11, 1948, a son of Pauline Dionne of Sebring, Fla., and the late Edward J. Dionne.
He met his wife, the former Jeri Colyer, daughter of the late Bellefontaine residents Lawrence and Ruth “Maxine” Colyer, while both were serving in the Army and were married in Bellefontaine on Dec. 23, 1978. She survives, along with a son, Jason of Sebring; sisters, Christine Olson of St. Joseph, Pa., and Joy Whitesall of Plant City, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
The Dionne family moved from Bellefontaine to Sebring in 2004 when he was hired as the veteran services officer for Highland County.
His military career took him to Vietnam and Germany. He retired from the U.S. Army while stationed in Utah after 30 years of service.
He was interred March 21, in Sarasota VA Cemetery with full military honors.
