John C. Hemphill, 91, of Russells Point, OH died July 2, 2021, at Logan Acres Care Center, Bellefontaine, OH.
John was born on December 11, 1929, in Bellefontaine, the youngest son of J. Frank and Helen Hemphill. He married Bertha “Sally” School Barnes and she preceded him in death in 1997. He was also preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Oris J. and Marion V. Hemphill, stepson, DaWayne Barnes and a niece, Linda Roberts.
John is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Betty Hemphill of Bellefontaine, stepdaughter, Celita (Glenn) Martin, grandchildren, Joshua (Stacey) Strunk, Matthew (Chelsea) Strunk, Lauren (Eric) Cowin, and Sarah Martin, all of Clovis, CA, and Nathan Barnes of Sidney, OH, five great grandchildren, three nieces, Dorothy Allen, Susan Clum, and Donna Stoner, and two nephews, Dan Hemphill, and Richard Hemphill.
John was a veteran of the United States Army, stationed in Korea. He was privileged to help place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during a Vets to DC trip. John had been a truck driver for Howard Sober Co, later Dallas Mavis Co. Even after retirement, he enjoyed driving on cross-country trips. John was known to all his friends for his good sense of humor, and kindness, as a man who was generous to anyone who was down on their luck.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Thursday, July 8, 2021, at Shoffstall Funeral Home, 205 S. Main St., Lakeview, with visitation from 10-11. Burial will be in Huntsville Cemetery with military rites performed by the Logan County Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be given in John’s memory to United Way of Logan County.
