Janet M. Mikesell Nicely, 81, of Lakeview and Englewood, Fla., passed away from complications of surgery at 12:33 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2018, at Lima Memorial Health System in Lima. She was born in Dayton on June 24, 1937, to the late Vernie and Betty Burt Mikesell.
On June 27, 1960, she married Russell H. Nicely in Dayton, and he preceded her in death Oct. 23, She also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Charlie Barcus; a niece, Linda Anderson; and two nephews, David Barcus and Dale Barcus.
Janet is survived by her son, Stephen (Catherine) Nicely of Lakeview; a sister, Nancy Barcus of Florida; three nieces, Chris Barcus, Kathy (Jerry) Kowalski and Anne Barcus-Route; several great-nieces and nephews; and her very special extended family, Mike and Sue Hammergren, Terri and Tim Lorenz, Rick and Susan Hammergren and their families.
A retired physical education teacher, Janet had taught at Stivers High School in Dayton and also substitute taught at Indian Lake Schools. She was honored by her peers in 2016 by being inducted into the Stivers Hall of Fame. Janet loved all sports, but most especially golf. She was a member of Prairie View Golf Club and recorded two holes-in-one during her lifetime. She was a member of the Englewood Shell Club and Indian Lake Eagles Auxiliary 3615. She also enjoyed gardening, birds, reading and most especially the time she was able to spend with her family and extended family.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
