James Paul Hengsteler, 91, of DeGraff, passed away at 11:35 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2017, at Logan Acres Care Center in Bellefontaine.
He was born in Zanesfield on May 23, 1925, to the late Leroy A. and Florence Eva Blue Hengsteler.
On Nov. 13, 1943, Jim married the former Betty Jane Valentine-Kost and she preceded him in death March 24, 1994. He was also preceded in death by a great-grandson, Dezmon Retterer; two brothers, William and Robert Hengsteler; and a nephew, John Hengsteler.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Joyce (John) Baker of Troy; two grandsons, Curtis (April) Retterer of South Carolina and Christopher (Shannon) Retterer of Sidney; two great-grandchildren, Christian and Kirsten; a sister, Lina (Robert) Jackson of DeGraff; and several nieces and nephews.
A U.S. Army WWII veteran, Jim was a 1943 graduate of DeGraff High School. After returning from the service, he worked at the DeGraff Lumber Company as a carpenter for 45 years. He was also a member of the DeGraff United Methodist Church.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Universal Home Health & Hospice Care and Logan Acres for the exceptional care they provided to Jim.
Calling is from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at the Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 210 W. Hayes St., DeGraff. A funeral service follows at 2 p.m. with Pastor Floyd Lundy officiating. Burial is in Greenwood-Union Cemetery, DeGraff.
