Board to review new athletic code with drug testing policy
Indian Lake Schools have hosted their fair share of foreign exchange students over the years, but to the best of officials’ knowledge, the school has never sent one before.
That will change after Spencer Wolf spends his junior year studying and living abroad in Germany, district school board members learned at the Monday evening meeting.
“I had no idea I would be the first from Indian Lake when I decided to join,” Spencer said.
“But when we started digging, (Principal Rob Underwood) said he didn’t think Indian Lake has ever had one before.”
The teen said he was inspired to join the foreign exchange program after listening to the Bellefontaine Rotary Club’s Youth Leadership Program last year.
“Rick Nelson’s speech on their International Exchange Student Program got me excited. I thought it sounded so cool. I’ve met exchange students over the years but I’ve never really thought of myself doing it.”
He applied for the local club’s sponsorship and selected Germany as his top choice. He later learned he would be sent to Wolfsburg, Germany, a city of 122,000 people that is home to a Volkswagen manufacturing plant and a centrally-located hub of the German auto-making industry.
“I just want to try to learn more about other cultures; that’s what foreign exchange is all about,” Spencer told the board. “The world gets a lot smaller when you know so many people. I’m thinking I might be able to work all over the world. They need engineers everywhere and that’s what I’m going into.”
