COSI Outreach Educator Perrin Shepherd led a student body assembly to start the day which included what he calls a “chem-mystery.”
He says this version of COSI on Wheels is a favorite, “Kids get to solve the mystery of who stole the things we need to make slime and then they get to make it.”
After the assembly, classes came to the gym by grade level, put on safety glasses and explored several different chemistry stations.
ILES PTO volunteers helped students make slime by carefully mixing polyvinyl alcohol and sodium tetra borate.
Other stations examined endothermic and exothermic reactions and a chemical reaction that produces light without heat.
Mr. Shepherd said, “We want kids to learn that chemistry is in their every day life. It’s in their household, they can see it in school. No matter where they go, they’ll find chemistry and they’ll learn chemistry is not something we should be scared of, but we should have fun with.”
The COSI On Wheels visit was sponsored by the Indian Lake Elementary PTO.
