Indian Lake Board of Education members heard from the district’s Director of Special Education at their Tuesday evening meeting.
Meaghen Tidwell gave her annual update on the progress that special education is enjoying at Indian Lake Schools. She said the total number of identified students is about 237, or 15 percent, of the student population.
The department offers services such as classroom inclusion, breakout rooms, resource rooms, other aide services, audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, therapy for the visually impaired, specialized transportation and more to help students in need.
Tidwell explained that the staff has made great strides on RTI — Response to Intervention —strategies over the past year, meeting all 10 state indicators for progress.
In addition to regular special education services, Indian Lake also houses Students With Disabilities multi-categorical units for students in elementary, middle and high school.
She praised the intervention specialists, aides and the district nurse for being committed to educating students with unique challenges and fragile medical conditions.
In other business, the board voted to purchase one regular bus that will be delivered this summer. Accepted the bid through META cooperative purchasing to buy (1) conventional bus at $93,693.00 to be delivered and paid for on or
after July 1, 2022.
Members also recognized ILHS freshman wrestler Owen Pummel for placing eighth in the OHSAA State Wrestling tournament earlier in March.
In other action, the board:
accepted the Logan County Beef Association grant in the amount of $200 to
the Family Consumer Science department to purchase beef products;
• approved the transfer of Janelle Maul to second-grade educational assistant to preschool educational assistant starting in 2022-23;
• accepted the retirement resignation of Marna Salmons, elementary teacher, effective June 1;
• accepted the resignation of Sherri Crockett, elementary educational assistant, effective at the end of the 2021-22 contract;
• extended a supplemental contract to Renee Metzger, high school assistant track 50 percent (shared contract with another coach);
• approved the professional development stipends of $50 per topic paid from the Performance-Based Compensation Fund for: Lisa Borgerding, Wes Hall, Marna Salmons, Dana Clune, Lindsey Imm, Elizabeth DeLeeuw, Pamela Mendenhall, Amy Fatone,
Jill Onyema, Eric Finke, Valarie Rapp, Amanda Fulkerson and Lisa Reese;
• accepted the change in the 2022-2023 calendar moving the Staff Professional Development day from Feb. 17, 2023, to Jan. 13, 2023, to accommodate a presenter’s schedule; and
• approved the FFA overnight trip to State Convention on May 4 and 5.
The next meeting is 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 18, in the board office.
