Students involved in the Indian Lake Middle School 21st Century Grant after-school program called Careers@IL are giving back to the community.
Teacher Valarie Rapp’s after-school math sessions have been running a store called “Cart Mart” to practice counting money and selling school supplies.
They decided to donate all the money raised with Cart Mart this year to the Logan County Vets to DC program. Students recently handed over nearly $200 to several local veterans who assist with the annual trip.
The veterans also spoke to the group about their time in the service and how it relates to events happening in the world right now.
Vietnam War Navy veteran Ross Sellars told the students, “You can look online and see what is happening to those people in Ukraine. They are giving their lives to save freedom.
“If our nation doesn’t stand up for others’ freedom, we will soon be fighting for our own.”
All the students shook hands with the veterans and thanked them for their service at the conclusion of the presentation.
The Logan County Vets to DC Trip will take place May 13 through 15 this spring. There will also be a second trip in September to make up for the trip they were not able to take during the pandemic.
