Tyler E. Evans, 27, of 201 Maple St., Belle Center, was charged with burglary related to an incident Friday morning at his grandfathter’s residence, 5008 W. State Route 273, Belle Center.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded about 8:25 a.m. on a report of a burglary in progress at the S.R. 273 address that was called in by Evans. He told dispatchers that he had stopped to check on the residence and found two subjects in the home who were possibly hiding in the attic.
Evans also told dispatchers that he was armed, but would put away the weapon when deputies arrived at the residence.
Upon deputies’ arrival, they found Evans on the front porch of the home, holding his hands up in the air. The defendant also reportedly was not wearing a coat or shoes.
He told deputies that the two individuals who were trying to rob his grandfather’s house were in the attic, and that they were possibly armed. Several back-up units also arrived on the scene.
Detectives contacted the homeowner, Evans’ grandfather, who was not home at the time. He said his grandson did not have permission to be at the home. He also had observed his grandson at his residence about 3:50 a.m. that day and said Evans was acting strangely at that time, “seeing people and things that aren’t there.”
Evans admitted to deputies that he gained entry to the home through an unsecured basement window.
Deputies and K9 Thor searched the home and didn’t find anyone else in the residence. The defendant was placed under arrest and was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
OVI arrests reported
Garold L. Baughman, 70, of 7358 Walnut St., Belle Center, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs relating to an incident Friday evening.
Deputies on patrol about 10 p.m. in the area of the former CJ’s gas station along State Route 117 near Northfork and observed Baughman’s vehicle pull into the north entrance of the gas station and then exit the paved parking lot, traveling in the yard of the closed business, toward Walnut Street.
Deputies initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle after Baughman entered his driveway on Walnut Street.
While speaking with Baughman, deputies observed that he displayed signs of intoxication. He told deputies he had consumed several drinks that evening and deputies located a cup containing an alcoholic beverage in the center console.
The defendant submitted to a portion of field sobriety testing and refused to complete the rest. He was also cited for having an open container in a motor vehicle and was transported to the jail.
• Brandy K. Newcomb, 40, of 323 Shady Lane Drive, Bellefontaine, was charged with OVI during a traffic stop in Huntsville about 12:55 a.m. Sunday.
Deputies on patrol in the area observed Newcomb make marked lanes violations with her vehicle and also that she came to a stop underneath the stop light on Napoleon Street and was blocking the intersection.
Deputies observed signs of intoxication from the driver and she told them she had consumed several beers that evening. An open can of beer was located in the center console of the vehicle.
The defendant was asked to exit the vehicle, and deputies said she had difficulty maintaining her balance. She refused to participate in field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest. At the jail, she also refused to participate in a chemical test and was released to a sober party. She was issued a citation for open container in a motor vehicle and marked lanes as well.
Passenger transported from rollover crash
Daisy M. Anderson-McMurry, 26, of Bellefontaine, was transported by Riverside EMS to Mary Rutan Hopsital for treatment of possible injuries sustained in a crash Sunday evening.
Deputies report she was a passenger in a westbound 2004 GMC Sierra operated by Matthew R. Anderson, 31, of Bellefontaine, about 5 p.m. on Township Road 45 near County Road 33 during sleet conditions. He reportedly drove off the left side of the road and overturned three times, with the vehicle coming to rest on its top.
According to the crash report, Anderson-McMurry and another second row passenger in the vehicle were not wearing their seat belts. The driver and a front seat passenger were wearing their seat belts.
Damage was heavy to the vehicle, which was towed from the scene.
• Spencer P. Keith, 17, of Maplewood, was checked at the scene of a crash Saturday evening by Tri-Valley EMS, but was not transported and did not complain of any injuries.
He reportedly was operating an eastbound 2003 Volkswagon Jetta about 8:45 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve in the 100 block of County Road 291 and went off the right side of the road, striking a driveway. His vehicle then went airborne and struck a tree.
Damage was heavy to the car, which was towed from the scene. The driver was cited for failure to control.
