Gold Star mothers came about after a group of mothers who had lost children in World War I suggested to President Woodrow Wilson they be allowed to wear a gold star above the blue star that was worn on the left sleeves of family members with family members in the service.
The practice evolved from wearing the star on sleeves to the display in windows of residences of a white banner with a blue border.
American Gold Star Mothers was organized June 4, 1928, and incorporated Jan. 5, 1929. The last Sunday in September was recognized as Gold Star Mothers Day in 1994.
