Two sisters sustained minor injuries Tuesday after they were hit while riding a scooter on a sidewalk, officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department report.
Alecka Board, 6, and Zaileigh Board, 4, both of 540 S. Main St., were on an electric scooter on the sidewalk in front of Oasis Drive Thru, 406 S. Main St., when they were struck around 4:20 p.m. by a sport utility vehicle turning from northbound Main into the Oasis.
Both girls, who were wearing helmets, were transported by a Bellefontaine squad to Mary Rutan Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Police Chief Brandon Standley noted the crash in his report to the Bellefontaine City Council on Tuesday. He said it is an example of the importance of safety equipment and for motorists to be on the lookout for children, pedestrians, bicyclists and others using the roads, sidewalks and crosswalks.
“It’s getting warmer and people are getting out,” he said.
The motorist, Alexis G. Ramos, 28, of Urbana, drove from the scene, rapidly accelerating through the parking lot as witnesses were screaming at her to stop.
Ron Coleman of Bellefontaine observed the SUV leaving the scene, drove after her and stopped Ramos on south Detroit Street.
He told her to return to the scene.
Ramos told officers she was trying to return to the crash scene when Coleman stopped her.
She has been cited for leaving the scene of a crash, driving under suspension and failure to yield.
The mother of the girls, Sherri Hartline, told officers the trio was southbound on the sidewalk and had stopped for another car entering the Oasis. The girls then proceeded onward when the Ramos SUV entered, hitting the girls and scooter.
Officers met with them and Hartline at MRH and documented the girls’ injuries.
