George E. Nixon, DO, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020, at his residence in Estero, Fla. He was born on Dec. 6, 1929, in Blairsville, Pa., a son of the late George B. and Elinor Milmay (née Munshower) Nixon. Dr. Nixon had been a resident of Estero for the past 16 years coming from Bellefontaine.
George was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy from 1950 through 1954.
He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh and received his doctorate degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was invited to visit Bellefontaine, where he joined Dr. John Morrow in his busy family practice. Dr. Nixon practiced Family Medicine from 1963 to the closing of his office practice in 1997. Taking care of many Logan County families and, particularly delivering babies, brought him great joy. After retiring, he continued to work part-time at the newly opened clinic at Mary Rutan Hospital until 2004, when he moved to Florida.
Dr. Nixon was a life member of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Ohio Osteopathic Association (OOA). He also served one term as the President of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.
He was a former member of the First Lutheran Church of Bellefontaine and a member of the Acacia Masonic Lodge #355 in Blairsville, PA.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jane E. Nixon of Estero, Florida; three children, Daniel E. (Lisa) Nixon, DO of Richmond, Va., Dana N. (Dennis) Stolly of Bellefontaine, and John R. Nixon of Bellbrook; his sister, Nancy (Joe) Nerone of Columbus; eight grandchildren, Wesley (Rachel) Bowen, Leighann (Josh) Adams, Tommy Stolly, Galen Nixon, Jack Stolly, Xander Nixon and Jennifer and Jonathan Pessefall; and 4 great grandchildren, Braxton and Kenzie Bowen, and Sydney and Austin Adams.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Debra Lynn.
Funeral services for Dr. Nixon will be on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m. at the Eichholtz Daring and Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main St., Bellefontaine. His family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon until the time of service. Burial will follow at the Bellefontaine Cemetery.
