West Liberty Fire Department installed an innovative new dry hydrant Thursday in Monroe Township, improving the fire protection of local residents and making fire department operations safer for firefighters.

The hydrant, installed on the County Road 29 bridge near Wenger’s Produce, allows fire department pumpers to draft water directly from the Mad River, providing improved fire protection to an estimated 264 residences.
This is the first of a six such hydrants along the Mad River with three planned for Monroe Township, one in Liberty Township and two in West Liberty.
Each jurisdiction is funding the hydrants in its territory.
The hydrants also will provide a back-up fire protection water supply for West Liberty in the event of a catastrophic fire or power outage.
