Emmett E. “Jim” Oakley, 97, of Jackson Center, passed away at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, at The Pavilion in Sidney. He was born in Shelby County on Oct. 14, 1920, to the late Wiley O. and Mamie L. Copeland Oakley.
On May 15, 1943, Jim married the former Evelyn I. Leininger in Jackson Center, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 14, 2013. He also was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Regula, Meryle Regula and Helen Zwiebel; and four brothers, Roy, Russell, William “Bill” and Herb Oakley.
Jim is survived by his two children, Nancy (Mick) McName and Rex (Fanny) Oakley, both of Jackson Center; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, in Jackson Center, where he was baptized and confirmed Jan. 9, 1944. Following his retirement from farming and Airstream, he served as janitor at Grace Lutheran Church. He and Evelyn enjoyed Western square dancing, and would dance every evening during their time in Florida.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 214 W. Pike St., Jackson Center. The Rev. Dr. Cathi Braasch officiates a funeral service at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at Grace Lutheran Church, 607 S. Main St., Jackson Center, following visitation that begins at 9 a.m. Burial follows in Glen Cemetery in Port Jefferson.
