Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating a “grandparent scam,” where a rural Bellefontaine woman fell victim to callers who said her grandson was in legal trouble and reportedly paid more than $230,000 during different transactions in the past month.
The elderly woman said she first received a phone call Jan. 4 from a man who said his name was “Bradley Gold” and claimed he worked for the South Dakota State Police. The caller said her grandson was facing criminal charges after a traffic stop, where police supposedly found a large amount of marijuana and cocaine.
She said she also received calls from a person claiming to be her grandson’s attorney.
During six different transactions from Jan. 4 through 23, the victim reportedly paid $66,000 for supposed court costs, attorney fees and bond money for her grandson. The money was sent to several different locations and states, she said.
Later in the month, she then received additional calls regarding another supposed incident, where her grandson had been released from jail and had struck a pedestrian with his vehicle. At that time, she reportedly paid scammers a total of $165,000.
Logan County Sheriff Randall J. Dodds said his office will be in contact with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office regarding this case.
