Mitchell L. Reynolds, 52, of Bellefontaine, was charged with felonious assault, operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officers during an incident Saturday evening.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched about 7:15 p.m. to the area of eastbound U.S. Route 33 near State Route 292 in reference to a reckless vehicle complaint. The 911 caller reportedly had stopped behind the suspect vehicle.
Upon arrival, deputies observed the defendant, Reynolds, outside the vehicle and saw him fall backward into a grassy area.
However, when deputies approached his vehicle, they said the defendant entered the vehicle and quickly accelerated, nearly striking a deputy about 10 feet away. The deputy said he jumped into a ditch to avoid being struck by the vehicle.
The suspect vehicle was stopped about 1.2 miles away. The driver at first did not comply with deputies’ commands. When asked to step outside his vehicle, deputies said he showed signs of intoxication and he reportedly fell and hit his head on his vehicle’s bumper.
Reynolds was placed under arrest, and when he was informed that he nearly struck a deputy with his vehicle, he began to apologize. At the Logan County Jail, he submitted to field sobriety tests, but refused to take a chemical breath test.
He also was charged with public indecency and was cited for no seat belt.
