Marcus Wilkerson, 35, of Springfield, was charged with failure to comply with the lawful order or signal of a police officer and was cited for no operator’s license related to an incident Tuesday.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department observed his vehicle about 5:35 p.m. in the area of Troy Road near West Williams Avenue, and noted that the driver turned his head away from officers, possibly in attempt to hide his face. He then continued to West Street and Garfield Avenue and then back to Troy Road.
While southbound on Troy Road, officers said he began reaching around in the vehicle, making furtive movements and drove left of center.
Officers activated the cruiser’s emergency lights and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Wilkerson reportedly continued southbound on Troy Road and failed to make a complete stop at west Sandusky Avenue. Officers then activated the cruiser’s audible siren, but the driver still did not pull over.
He continued driving southbound on Troy Road and reportedly rolled through the stop sign at west Columbus Avenue, and then continued driving at slow speeds. The driver finally came to a stop in the area of west Chillicothe Avenue and St. Paris Street.
When asked by officers why he did not pull over sooner, the defendant reportedly said he didn’t want to get his mother’s vehicle towed.
Officers conducted a search of Wilkerson and the vehicle, and found no illegal contraband. However, officers noted that a plastic knot from a baggie was found, commonly seen with drug activity. He was transported to the Logan County Jail.
OVI charge filed
