William Abrams, 44, of West Manchester, was charged with possession of drugs, tampering with evidence and identity fraud related to a traffic stop about 4:15 p.m. Friday.
Officers of the Washington Township Police Department on patrol in the area of State Route 235 and State Route 274 observed a vehicle with a broken front windshield and loud exhaust and initiated the stop.
Officers observed a female in the passenger seat with her head down who was not responding to officers. When officers asked the driver, Abrams, what was wrong with the female passenger, he advised they had been working on a roof all day.
An Indian Lake squad was requested to the scene to check the well-being of the female passenger. She was identified as Jessica Burd, 40, of Ludlow Falls.
Officers learned that Burd had an active warrant out for her arrest from Montgomery County. After being checked and cleared by EMS, she was placed under arrest.
Abrams was asked to exit the vehicle and officers noticed him making furtive movements. Officers reached inside the vehicle and pinned Abrams’ arm against his body, discovering Abrams was concealing a clear plastic baggie containing a white crystal substance.
The defendant was removed from the vehicle and placed under arrest.
Once at the jail, Abrams stated he had given false name to the officers and provided officers with a new Social Security security number. He said he previously gave his brother‘s name and Social Security number knowing he had outstanding warrants.
Officers confirmed that Abrams had warrants out of Montgomery County.
Abrams also was cited for driving under child support suspension and equipment violations.
