A motorist who failed to stop for traffic in Monday’s fatal crash has been cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead.
Former Belle Center resident Marvin Hilty, 88, now of Columbus, was driving a car southbound in the 4600 block of north U.S. Route 68 around 12:15 p.m. Monday and his car slammed into the rear of a panel van, deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report.
His wife, Mary, 86, of Columbus, was unresponsive at the scene and was transported from the scene by a CareFlight helicopter to OSU. She died Monday, deputies reported Tuesday morning
The panel van was operated by Allan Rutkowski, 52, of Maumee, and it was pushed into a car operated by Cody Sniffen, 25, of Kenton. Both Rutkowski and Sniffen were stopped in traffic for a local utility work crew.
The work zone was properly marked and the crew was using portable lights to control traffic, deputies report.
Marvin Hilty was transported by a BMRT squad to Mary Rutan Hospital and later transferred to OSU Wexner Medical Center in Columbus for treatment of his injuries. Rutkowski complained of a loss of feelings in his legs and was flown by Lifeflight to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima for treatment.
Sniffen refused treatment at the scene.
It was the eight fatal crash in Logan County this year.
