As a World War II veteran serving in Okinawa, Japan, and the Pacific Theatre, Roger Timmons of Huntsville has seen a lot in his 90 years, but never the inside of a school bus. That was until Monday when Indian Lake school bus driver Elizabeth Grube and about 25 passengers pulled up to his Seminole Island home to fulfill a longtime dream.

Mr. Timmons had always walked to the neighborhood school from the family home in the West Jefferson school district and never experienced riding the bus to school — something he’d always wanted to do, according to his daughter Kelly Shaw of Rushsylvania, who initiated the surprise excursion and accompanied her father on his inaugural ride.
Her call to the school put in action members of the Indian Lake Elementary student council, who helped put the plan together with transportation crews and went along for the ride to complete the experience.
