All dogs were adopted within minutes of the start of the Top of Ohio Pet Shelter’s Paws N Claws adoption event Saturday at the Indian Lake Rollarena, with prospective pet parents coming from as far as Lima to find their forever friend.

Keith Ream and Mary Barker traveled from Ft. Shawnee, Lima, to the event after hearing about the shelter’s plight last week and adopted River, a female boxer mix.
“We heard about (the shelter’s financial problems), certainly wanted to adopt another pet and wanted to help,” Mr. Ream explained. “It just seemed like the right time.”
TOPS director Barbara Faulkner was overwhelmed by all support shown both Sunday and in the days following the shelter closure announcement Tuesday. At that time, the shelter had more than 50 dogs and a dozen cats to find homes for. By Sunday morning, there were eight dogs left, four of which were adopted before three made the trip to the rink Sunday afternoon. One was left behind because of its temperament toward children and remains adoptable at the shelter located at 2521 N. U.S. Route 68, Bellefontaine.
Additionally, seven dogs that have been taken in over the last few days will be available for adoption if they are not claimed and clear veterinary testing. The shelter will continue to take in animals until the end of its county contract June 9.
