A potential budget battle was averted Thursday after a brief conversation between the Logan County Veterans Services Commission and Logan County Commissioner Tony Core.
Logan County Commissioners Tony Core, John Bayliss and Dustin Wickersham
Mr. Core visited with the veterans agency prior to their 11 a.m. special meeting and presented them with a letter asking for an explanation to support an eight-percent salary increase for the commission’s employees.
Within minutes, he had an answer and assured the commission members the agency would get its requested $486,008.27 spending authority for 2017.
State law allows the veterans commission to ask for slightly more than $550,000 this year, the amount 0.5 mills in property tax would generate countywide.
“We just wanted to know what this was for,” Mr. Core told commission President Mike Kennedy and the rest of the five-member board.
Agency head Shelley Kneece was not happy with how the county commissioners handled the budget process, telling Mr. Core she will not communicate with his office via the county panel’s human resources manager Brian Dunn.
She wants direct communication with commissioners and she insisted they act before Tuesday’s regular veteran’s commission meeting.
