Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds shared a number of statistics from 2018 and highlighted goals for the upcoming year during a Coffee with the Sheriff event this morning at Sweet Aromas, 120 E. Court Ave., Bellefontaine, a community outreach event that will continue throughout 2019 in different locations around Logan County.
The sheriff related that one of his objectives for this year is to purchase and put into service a canine for the department, along with a deputy who would be assigned to the animal. There would be many assets to having a canine unit in-house, he said.
“Right now, we’re able to call in other agencies with canines when we need one on a traffic stop or other locations, but it would be so much more efficient if we had our own,” he said. “We’d be able to use the canine when we’re doing a sweep of the area schools or when we’re working the road.
“Having a canine also is such a great public relations tool as well, and we’d have the dog out at community events. If we currently had a canine, we’d have the dog here today. The canines are always such a hit with kids and adults as well.”
