Clifford Eugene “Cliff” Hoenie, 87, of Huntsville, died Friday, July 15, 2016, at Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine.
He was born on Sept. 12, 1928 in Celina, to the late Clifford and Mary Katherine Gast Hoenie.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marge Volz Hoenie; eight children, David Hoenie, Ann (Dave) Norckauer, Mary (Cy) Moore, Carol (Jeff) Green, Peggy (Mark) Wilson, Jane (Jeff Amlin) Dockery, Therese (Glenn) Hilker and Judy (Bob) Silva; 27 grandchildren and spouses; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barb Brophy.
These two “Mercer County kids” traveled all over the world, from Hong Kong, to Jerusalem, to the Fiords, and beyond.
Cliff enlisted in the Navy, went to NROTC as a student at Notre Dame, became a naval officer, and is a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. Having separated from the Navy, his job search took him to Dayton and the E.F. MacDonald Company, later purchased by Carlson Industries, where he worked in the motivation business for 32 years, rising from copy editor to eventually becoming executive vice president.
After retiring, his time was spent with Marge and God, golf, and gardening. He faithfully attended daily Mass. One of his greatest joys was to witness his grandson, Fr. Sean Wilson, ordained as a Catholic priest on May 21, 2016. He played lots of golf and insisted on planting a garden, even this year. He also served as president of the Indian Lake Watershed Project and volunteered with the Indian Lake Development Corporation, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and Knights of Columbus.
He lived until he died. A life well-lived, indeed!
Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Friday, July 22, at St. Mary of the Woods Church, 464 Madison Ave., Russells Point, where visitation with family and friends is one hour prior to Mass. Inurnment is in Huntsville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul or Wounded Warriors Project are gratefully requested.
Arrangements are in the care of Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview, where condolences can be expressed at shoffstallfuneralhome.com.
