Clara L. Herring, 94, of Lakeview, formerly of Dade City, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Heartland of Indian Lake.
She was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Belle Center, to the late Carl and Lenore Wall Shape. On Dec. 21, 1957, she married Robert L. Herring in Ft. Riley, Kan., and he preceded her in death Oct. 19, 2007. She also was preceded in death by three stepchildren, Barbara, Robert Herring Jr. and Billy Herring, two sisters, Lois Hastings and Dorothy Shape; six brothers, Richard, Russell, Edward, John, Paul Rodney and James Shape.
She is survived by two sisters, Ann Smith of Bellefontaine and Frances Webb of Waynesfield; a brother, Robert Shape of Lakeview; two sisters-in-law, Rose Shape and Martha Shape, both of Bellefontaine; and several dear nieces and nephews.
A 1940 graduate of Rushsylvania High School, she attended her 75th class reunion at the alumni gathering last year. Together with her husband, Clara managed hotels and campgrounds. She belonged to Soggy Bottom Bluegrass Group in Dade City, Fla., and was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Clara loved to listen to her husband play the fiddle and bluegrass music, and enjoyed camping. During WWII, she flew to Germany in a prop plane to see her husband. Clara was a kind and generous person who will be missed by all who knew her.
Per Mrs. Herring’s wishes, her body was cremated. Inurnment will be beside her husband in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla., at a later date.
