The Logan County Board of Elections in a regular meeting Thursday approved the list of candidates and issues set to appear on the May 7 primary election ballot, certifying each levy request and all but one nominee for office in the city of Bellefontaine.
A petition filed by incumbent 4th Ward Bellefontaine City Councilman Mick Lile was rejected on a technicality. The section of his petition labeled “petition for candidate” was not completed on one of his pages, which invalidates all of the signatures on that page, the board of elections reported Thursday. Tossing out those signatures put Lile below the required number of valid signatures for candidacy. Lile will now have to run for office as a write-in candidate ahead of the General Election in November. His term expires Dec. 31.
In the event the seat is vacated, city council will appoint a member in accordance with its procedures.
The only contested primary race between candidates is for Bellefontaine city auditor, as Rebecca Wilkins challenges incumbent Fred Brentlinger on the Republican ticket.
All other primary races are uncontested, and include:
• Ben Stahler, mayor;
• Josh Stolly, law director;
• Zeb Wagner, president of city council;
• Richard Kurtz, First Ward;
• Jordan Reser, Second Ward;
• Peter DeSomma, Third Ward;
• Deborah Baker, Allen Hadley and Kyle Springs, council at-large (three candidates to be chosen.)
Logan County voters will combine to decide a total of 10 levy questions that would collectively generate some $6 million to county schools, agencies and local municipalities.
