Bellefontaine City Council members took the first steps Monday to pass pay raises prior to the start of a new year.
Typically, the council has waited until after a new year to set pay for supervisors, service workers and clerical staff.
Both the police and fire unions are in the midst of three-year agreements and the pay increases for most of the non-union employees mirrors increases in those agreements.
The pay ordinances have two more readings, and if adopted, will give most supervisors, service workers and clerical staff a two-percent raise.
Police Chief Brandon Standley was given a 3.25 percent raise to bring his salary more in line with comparable communities, Service-Safety Director James Holycross said.
